As usual, some truly stunning pieces at Erie Basin. Top, 1890s Moonstone Ring. Bottom, 1820s Georgian Foiled Red Paste Bracelet.

In the Georgian era there was a real appreciation for paste (crystal) jewelry. Victorians mostly used paste to imitate real gemstones, but Georgians appreciated the creative potential of faking it. Much of Georgian paste is in hyper-saturated colors that wouldn’t likely occur in natural gems.  And the pastes were backed in silver or colored foils to give them an intense silvery glow.  The stones in this bracelet are just— in a word— unreal.
